Amazon brings facial recognition to your front door
The future of surveillance
The patent application(Patent No: US 20180341835A1 generating composite facial image using audio and video recording and communication devices), which was filed by doorbell company Ring prior to being purchased by Amazon earlier this year, shows a system that law enforcement officers can use to match faces of people walking by your house who might be deemed "suspicious." Homeowners could add photographs into the system, potentially allowing the doorbell's facial recognition program to scan anyone who walks by. If a match occurs, that information could be sent to the police, who could arrive in minutes.
"It’s rare for patent applications to lay out, in such nightmarish detail, the world a company wants to bring about," said Jacob Snow, a technology and civil liberties attorney at the ACLU. "Amazon is dreaming of a dangerous future, with its technology at the center of a massive decentralized surveillance network, running real-time facial recognition on members of the public using cameras installed in people’s doorbells."
Project Connected Home over IP Intends to Simplify Development for Device Manufacturers and Increase Compatibility for Consumers
As stated above "Project Connected Home over IP Intends to Simplify Development for Device Manufacturers and Increase Compatibility for Consumers" this is just stating that these companies are working to together to build devices that are more compatible but not for the consumers. There working together to build a global surveillance system.
"The industry working group will take an open-source approach for the development and implementation of a new, unified connectivity protocol. The project intends to use contributions from market-tested smart home technologies from Amazon, Apple, Google, Zigbee Alliance, and others. The decision to leverage these technologies is expected to accelerate the development of the protocol, and deliver benefits to manufacturers and consumers faster."
